Long Racing Engines performs all engine testing and analysis on a Superflow 901 engine dyno.  This equipment allows us to view a number of different engine variables under actual racing (driving) conditions.  We monitor rpm, torque, horsepower, water temperature, oil pressure, brake specific fuel consumption, air fuel ratio, scfm, and fuel pressure.  Depending on the application, we also measure either manifold vacuum, crankcase vacuum, or blower pressure (lbs of boost).  On single four barrel carburetors, we separate the front and rear of the carb. and take two individual lb/hour readings.  Exhaust gas temperatures can also be measured.  We have recently added oxygen sensors to obtain a more accurate, instantaneous air fuel ratio.  Unlike some engine shops, L.R.E. inputs weather data before every single run to ensure the accuracy of the test.  We also measure and record the specific gravity of the fuel that will be used.  All of these variables are essential to the accuracy and repeatability of the test.

Each dyno session consists of ignition timing changes, carburetor jet and air bleed changes, valve adjustments, and other minor tuning techniques.  We will also make cam timing adjustments to engines using a belt drive.  This procedure will only be performed at the customers request if the valve clearances at the different cam phasing positions are known.  We also test carburetor spacers and reversion plates.  Other changes will incur additional costs.

There is only so much that can be done to an engine without changing major components. Power comes from the induction system (heads, intake, carb.) and the camshaft.  Assuming no mechanical or electrical problems, 99.9% of engines that do not reach their expected potential have one or more of these components that do not work well with the others.  Long Racing Engines strongly recommends having a professional engine builder assist in choosing these critical components.

Running an engine on a dyno is the best way to check for minor problems that an engine may have prior to installing the engine into the car.  Early detection of problems can save both time and money.  The dyno also allows the piston rings to seal and the tune up of the engine to be close to race ready (constantly changing weather conditions require additional tuning at the track).  Running your engine in on a dyno will ensure that you start the season with a problem free engine.  Call today to schedule your dyno session
